The Skyscale mount is true to its name. This dragon is the only mount in GW2 that can actually fly. From a seated position, the Skyscale mount in Guild Wars 2 can take off and climb heights that were previously only possible by the jump of the Springer.
During the Glory of Dragonsstory step, your character unlocks the ability to borrow single-use skyscales at Skyscale Roostsacross Dragonfall. Skyscales are useful for their ability to gain height while also moving horizontally in the air, which helps navigating difficult terrain. Dragonfall is an awful zone without a flying mount. I'm really enjoying the story of "All or Nothing" (finale chapter to LWS4), but I gotta say, Dragonfall is a pain in the ass to navigate without a flying mount, and even the flying mounts they give you are irritatingly limited. Way too many mobs, way too dense, hitting way too hard.
As such, I was familiar with the frustrations of Dragonriding even before I tried to ride one, but GW2 does something that Dragonflight doesn’t: it provides other mounts for situations.
