Hi there ive had many mk4 golf gti's over the years,i would say the 1.8turbo is the one to buy,the 2.0litre is flat on performance compared to the 1.8 turbo which has good performance and good fuel economy and even better when you remap it. i currently have a 1.8 turbo Anniversary which i have had remapped to 250 bhp which is awesome on performance and fuel economy is great, ive had upto 40mpg
here it is. 1.8t torque specs. Carrillo conrods- 55lb/ft. Brute conrods- 50 lb/ft. ARP main studs- 65 lb/ft. ARP bolts are coated with a protective oil, not lubricant. Clean with solvent and use the lube provided by ARP. Cam caps- 10Nm-7.37 lb/ft. Cam gear- 65Nm- 47.94 lb/ft. Cam pos. sensor- 25Nm-18.44 lb/ft.

The #1 biggest weakness of the 1.8t platform are the rods, which even with mildly aggressive k04 tunes can fail. Drop in's are easy, relatively inexpensive, and on your platform can be done without removing the entire engine from the engine bay (cylinder head only, drop oil pan, have fun).
