I'd suggest your setting the lens to MF, turn the focus ring yourself to bring it back to focus. Once the lens is in focus, turn the switch back to AF and try auto focus again. Depending upon which version of 18-55mm yours is, a newer one or some other lens alternatives might be a nice upgrade anyway. But first, a common reason the AF system gets damaged is manually overriding the auto focus of a micro motor lens without first turning the AF off at the switch. Canon warns not to do that with their micro motor lenses.

Take a look at the post by Canon Product Expert Jesse in this thread. wrote: I have an 18-55 IS II. It won't autofocus at all. I can't hear the gears running, as if the lens doesn't know that it's on autofocus mode. I've also tried this on the 55-250, and the 50mm f1.8, but those lenses are able to autofocus well. Any suggestions on a lense that won't break the bank and is compatible with a Rebel T6? If you have a small bank, then you might want to explore a used lens of the same type. Visit KEH camera. If you need to blow away dust or debris, use a rocket blower or a brush. Then re-attach the lens, listening carefully for the click that indicates it’s in position. 5. Make sure your viewfinder is sharp. If your viewfinder is dirty, your lens will focus but the viewfinder image will still look blurry.
